Starfish are marine animals found in oceans worldwide, from shallow tide pools to the deepest ocean trenches. Most starfish have five arms, though some species can have many more. They move slowly across the ocean floor using thousands of tiny tube feet underneath their bodies.
One of the most remarkable features of starfish is their ability to regenerate lost arms. If a starfish loses an arm to a predator or injury, it can grow a new one over time. Some species can even regenerate an entire body from a single arm.
Starfish don't have brains or blood. Instead, they have a simple nervous system and use seawater that circulates through their bodies for movement and nutrition. They eat by pushing their stomachs out through their mouths to digest food externally.
These creatures are carnivorous predators and scavengers. Many starfish feed on mollusks, corals, and other slow-moving sea creatures. Some species are known to eat sponges or detritus on the ocean floor.
