Facts about BLACK BEAR

Black bears are highly intelligent and adaptable animals found throughout North America. These powerful mammals can weigh between 200 and 600 pounds and are known for their excellent sense of smell, which is seven times better than a bloodhound's. Despite their size and strength, black bears are generally shy and prefer to avoid human contact. They are omnivores, eating everything from berries and nuts to fish and insects. Black bears are skilled climbers and can run up to 30 miles per hour. During winter, they enter a state of torpor, reducing their heart rate and body temperature to conserve energy. Female bears are fiercely protective mothers and typically raise cubs for about 18 months before they become independent.
